What Is a Process?

A process is a defined set of activities that transforms inputs into outputs to deliver value to a customer or stakeholder. Processes operate within established controls and governance to ensure consistency, quality, and compliance.

This page provides a high-level definition of a process within the Enterprise Business Process Architecture and explains how processes are distinguished from procedures, systems, and organizational roles.

Purpose

Processes provide the structural framework for how work is performed across the enterprise. They enable consistent execution, accountability, and governance independent of individual roles or systems.

Process Definition

Within the Business Process Architecture, a process is defined by its objective, inputs, outputs, controls, and ownership. Processes may span multiple functions and are not limited to a single department or system.

Scope of Application

Processes apply to both quality-governed and non-quality enterprise activities. The level of control and documentation associated with a process is determined by its regulatory impact, risk, and business criticality.

What a Process Is Not

A process is not a procedure, work instruction, form, or system configuration. These elements support process execution but do not define the process itself.
